Team Cookietime made up of Keith Murray and
Andy MacBeth where too strong for runners up Sportzhub.com
Steve Gurney, Steve Knowles and Tim Pearson winning the inaugural
Christchurch 24 Hour Adventure Race held October 6th and 7th.
Team Sportzhub.com where early leaders after
the kayak and early stages of the trekking stage. However
a navigation option gave Cookietime a small lead going into
the final and most challenging stage - the mountain bike.
Cookietime extended their lead during the bike to finish in
a time of 11 hours and 47 minutes, 45 minutes clear of their
next rival.
30 teams entered the grueling event, which saw
participants begin in Lyttleton Harbour and finish in Akaroa
after traversing the peninsula multiple times on foot and
bike. In total participants climbed over 4000m, an equalivent
height to Mt Cook.
Previous Auckland and Wellington winners in
the four-person open division team Encompass, encountered
kayak difficulties when their rudder sheared off in the rough
conditions. After a valiant effort Encompass could only manage
second to the very impressive Canterbury team Rudge Whitworth
made up of Julian Sykes, Clair Sykes, Ned Norton and Heath
DeGarnhan.
In all, only eighteen teams competed the entire
course where the Peninsula geography took it's toll on competitors
as the night descended. Team Arrow International where the
last team in a time of 22 hours and 55 minutes.
Team Encompass now lead the New Zealand
24 Hour Championship Series on 85 points with The Blue Ducks
trailing closely on 67 points. Either team could win the series
in the final to be held in the Catlins on October the 27th
and 28th.
