2001 Christchurch Race Report

Team Cookietime made up of Keith Murray and Andy MacBeth where too strong for runners up Sportzhub.com Steve Gurney, Steve Knowles and Tim Pearson winning the inaugural Christchurch 24 Hour Adventure Race held October 6th and 7th.

Team Sportzhub.com where early leaders after the kayak and early stages of the trekking stage. However a navigation option gave Cookietime a small lead going into the final and most challenging stage - the mountain bike. Cookietime extended their lead during the bike to finish in a time of 11 hours and 47 minutes, 45 minutes clear of their next rival.

30 teams entered the grueling event, which saw participants begin in Lyttleton Harbour and finish in Akaroa after traversing the peninsula multiple times on foot and bike. In total participants climbed over 4000m, an equalivent height to Mt Cook.

Previous Auckland and Wellington winners in the four-person open division team Encompass, encountered kayak difficulties when their rudder sheared off in the rough conditions. After a valiant effort Encompass could only manage second to the very impressive Canterbury team Rudge Whitworth made up of Julian Sykes, Clair Sykes, Ned Norton and Heath DeGarnhan.

In all, only eighteen teams competed the entire course where the Peninsula geography took it's toll on competitors as the night descended. Team Arrow International where the last team in a time of 22 hours and 55 minutes.

Team Encompass now lead the New Zealand 24 Hour Championship Series on 85 points with The Blue Ducks trailing closely on 67 points. Either team could win the series in the final to be held in the Catlins on October the 27th and 28th.
