2001 Wellington Race Report

Team Encompass stamp authority on North Island 24 Hour events

Team Encompass made up of Craig Stevens, Mike Johnson, previous Coast to Coast winner Kate Callaghan and Graeme Shaw made it two in a row winning the second event in the Arrow International 24 Hour Adventure Race Series held in Wellington on September 8th and 9th.

Proving their all round adventure racing abilities, Team Encompass overcome early kayak difficulties when a rudder sheared off to be third during the kayak. It was during the tramp, which involved climbing nearly 2000 vertical meters that Encompass took the lead form Hamilton's Cycle Time, which consisted of Jeremy Kuggeleijn and New Zealand rower Mike Gilbert. Jeremy and Mike comfortably won the two person open category finishing just eight minutes behind overall winners Team Encompass.

Hot favorites to take out line honors were Australian and three times uncle Toby's Champion Guy Andrews with Auckland based Steve Knowles. Unfortunately after some difficulties with their kayak, and navigational errors during the mountain run and mountain biking leg, the two had to forfeit the race.

Encompass completed the course in 11 hour and 10 minutes, the quickest time yet for an event in the 24 Hour Adventure Race Series. Race Director Richard Anderson said "the speedy results were due to a shorter than normal course and fantastic weather conditions". If weather conditions had been poor, Richard predicted the winning time would have been four hours longer.

The course involved kayaking from Frank Kitts Lagoon to Somes Island, Petone Wharf, the Ewen Bridge on the Hutt River and finally Day's Bay. The second leg involved tramping from Day's Bay to Wainuiomata, the Orongoronga River, Papatahi Crossing and finally Ocean Beach. The final leg involved mountain biking from Ocean beach via the coastline, Pencarrow Head and finished at Eastbourne.

Team Encompass now lead the New Zealand 24 Hour Championship Series on 60 points with The Blue Ducks trailing closely on 50 points after two successful second placings in Auckland and Wellington. The series now moves to Christchurch for the fifth event to be held October the 6th and 7th with the final in Dunedin on October the 27th and 28th.
