This year's Arrow International Sydney
24 Hour Adventure Race started and finished on the edge of
Lake Macquarie 100km north of Sydney. The race included Watagan's
Forest and the Great North Walking Track. With poor weather
forecasted, it was a relief to have overcast but dry conditions
for the event.
The race started at 8am with a 30km kayak in Lake Macquarie.
First off the water was the two man team " Knot Shore"
- Stu Adams and Chad Singleton in 2 hours 33 minutes. Only
1 minute back was the 4 person mixed team "The Grunting
Wombats" - Damon Goerke, Kim Willocks, Matt Blundell
and Dave Proven.
During leg two, which involved a 29km mountain bike ride over
the Great North Walking Track, team AROC - Tom Landon Smith,
Alina McMasters and Kiwi, Karl Strode-Penny made their mark
finishing the leg second, just 4 minutes behind team Knot
Shore.
Leg three consisted of a 11km walk over some of the roughest
terrain in the Great North Walking Track. During this leg,
team AROC joined Knot Shore to complete the leg in just 2
hours. Team Crank - Michael Maryment, Matt DeBelin, Jane Cooksley
and Andrew Cooksley overtook the Grunting Wombats to lead
the four mixed division.
Legs 4, 5 and 6 were unassisted, where teams undertook a 22
km MTB, followed by a 15km off trail foot rogaine, followed
by a final 18 km MTB. At this point, AROC took control of
the race and had built up a healthy lead of 1 hour 22 minutes
going into the last leg, an 11km lake coasteering section
to be completed in the dark. This was the first time a night
coasteering leg was introduced to adventure racing in Australasia.
AROC took 2 hours 11 minutes to complete the leg and win the
race in and overall time of 14 hours 24 minutes. Second was
team Knot Shore in 15:25 and in third place, Team Crank in
15:55. Showing the most endurance was team GHD Vanguard who
missed a few controls but made all transitions to reach the
finish in 25:54 (excluding penalties).
